Change to Spring 2002 Academic Calendar
The University at Buffalo has changed the Spring 2002 academic calendar. This change results from having too few instructional days in the original calendar and the subsequent discovery that, although the calendar met a number of regulations governing SUNY academic calendars, it did not fulfill the State Education Department's definition of full–time study.
With the assistance of the Faculty Senate, a revised calendar has been adopted. The adjusted calendar restores most instruction days and complies with the State requirement of 15 instructional weeks (including examinations). It is, all agree, the best solution amongst the very unsatisfactory options available to us.
The revised calendar extends instructional days to Friday, May 3, 2002. Final examination week begins on Saturday, May 4th and continues uninterrupted (including Sunday, May 5th) until Thursday, May 9th. Reading days are eliminated. Commencement will occur as scheduled. These changes should be incorporated into course syllabus.
Original Calendar
- Last day of classes: Monday, April 29
- Reading Days: Tue., April 30/Wed., May 1
- Begin Final Exams: Thursday, May 2
- End Final Exams: Thursday, May 9
Amended Calendar
- Last day of classes: Friday, May 3
- No Reading Days
- Begin Final Exams: Saturday, May 4
- End Final Exams: Thursday, May 9
State law requires accommodation for religious observance. For students and faculty who practice strict religious observance, Saturday or Sunday may be regarded as the Sabbath precluding taking or giving an examination. Please be aware State Education statute which states, "It shall be the responsibility of the faculty and of the administrative officials of each institution of higher education to make available to each student who is absent from school, because of his or her religious beliefs, an equivalent opportunity...to make up any examination...which he or she may have missed because of such absence on any particular day or days." The statue further provides that "Any student, who is aggrieved by the alleged failure of any faculty or administrative officials to comply in good faith with the provisions of this section, shall be entitled to maintain an action proceeding in the supreme court of the county in which such institution of higher education is located for the enforcement of his or her rights under this section." Make up examinations will be required for students who state they are unable to take an examination on their day of observance.
* Denotes Schedule Change.
** Libraries and Computer Center/Satellites open normal hours.
