Electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN)

This Web page will guide you to complete the Direct Loan or Parent PLUS loan process.

A U.S. Department of Education issued PIN is required to complete the electronic Master Promissory Note process. Visit the PIN Web site if you need additional information.

The eMPN can be completed in 10 easy steps. It may be helpful to print the 10 steps for reference and as a checklist for required information. Please call the Student Response Center if you have any questions about this process.

Direct Stafford Loan Borrowers

  • A Direct Stafford Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan requires a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling.
  • The MPN is an agreement to pay back any Direct Stafford Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans.
  • Entrance Counseling is an acknowledgment of borrower rights and responsibilities.

Federal Direct Parent Loans (PLUS)

  • PLUS Loans require a Parent Data Form and electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN) to be completed by the parent.
  • Only one parent should be listed on the Parent Data Form and the same parent should complete the eMPN.
  • A U.S. Department of Education PIN number is needed to complete the eMPN.
