Study Abroad Checklist

  1. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • You must be registered for at least 6 credit hours at any college or university in order to be eligible for Federal Student Aid
  1. Acknowledge UB Financial Aid Terms and Conditions, and accept the financial aid awards via BIRD
  2. Submit all required documents to Student Academic Records & Financial Services
  • Direct Loan promissory note signed and returned
  • Detailed list of program costs (for financial aid recipients only; this information is needed for a budget increase and should be brought to your financial aid advising appointment)
  • Acceptance notification from program (for financial aid recipients only; this information is needed for a budget increase and should be brought to your financial aid advising appointment)
  1. First time borrowers must complete Entrance Counseling for Direct Loans.
  2. Complete and notarize a Power of Attorney (POA) form at any bank and leave your designated proxy.
  3. Update local and permanent address on MyUB.
  4. Consider enrolling in the University's Direct Deposit Program. (This free service will allow any applicable financial aid refunds to be directly deposited into your bank account.)
  5. Complete registration form with Study Abroad (if participating in a UB or SUNY program).
  6. Complete Leave of Absence Form with academic advisor (if participating in a community college or non-SUNY program).

Graduating Seniors Only

  1. Complete Exit Counseling for Direct Loans, Perkins, and/or Health Profession Loans.
  2. File Degree Card (Undergraduate Student) and/or Application to Candidacy (Graduate Student) with Student Academic Records & Financial Services.

SUNY Community College or Non-SUNY Program Participation

If participating in this type of program, you should be registering for at least 6 credit hours at the host institution. If you are not registered at UB, the financial aid award package will be forwarded to the Host Institution. Any refunds will be sent to the student by the host institution.

  1. Sign the Study Abroad Consortium Agreement Form (PDF).
  • Two or more institutions may enter into a consortium or contractual agreement so that a student can continue to receive Federal Financial Aid while studying at a school or organization other than his/her “home” institution (where he/she will receive a degree). You must complete and submit the Study Abroad Consortium Agreement Form (PDF) to Student Academic Records & Financial Services.
  1. Obtain acceptance notification from the host institution or program.
  2. Obtain the study abroad budget sheet (itinerary) from the host institution.
  3. Obtain the beginning and end dates of the study abroad program (if different from UB).
  4. Review the Leave of Absence Web page and submit the Leave of Absence Form to Student Academic Records & Financial Services.
