Getting Started
Question: I have forgotten my password, what should I do?
Answer:
- You'll need to contact the CIT Accounts Office.
Question: How do I find my UBit name and password?
Answer:
- To learn your UBit name, go to the CIT Web site, and enter your first and last name. If you need help setting your password, contact the help desk.
Question: Are there any minimum requirements for my computer to be able to access web registration?
Answer:
- MyUB will work with older browsers. For optimal performance, however, we recommend a minimum browser requirement of Netscape or Internet Explorer version 4.0. In addition to this, it would be a good idea to check some settings on your browser.
- Be sure that your browser is not set to never check for newer versions of a cached page. The following instruction should help you check this setting. (versions may differ slightly)
- Netscape
- Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
- Click the + next to Advanced.
- Click the word Cache.
- Be sure that Never is not selected.
- Internet Explorer
- Select Internet Options from the View menu
- Under the category Temporary Internet files, click the Settings button
- Be sure that Never is not selected.
- If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, you might need to change the default settings so that it does not use http 1.1. The following instructions should help you do this:
- Select Internet Options from the View menu
- Click on the Advanced tab
- Scroll down until you see HTTP 1.1 settings
- Uncheck both options under this heading.
Question: What are the hours of availability for MyUB?
Answer:
- MyUB is available 24/7. Web Registration, MyGrades, GPA, My Checkstops, and other service applications are available seven days a week - 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Web Registration is not available New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Question: How do I access MyUB for the first time?
Answer:
- You need a UBit name and password to access MyUB for the first time. Incoming freshmen will be given their UBit name and learn about MyUB access during summer orientation. Your initial password is a 10-digit number made up of the following: month and day of your birthday, and the last 6 digits of your UB Card number. For example, if your birthday is February 13th, and your UB Card number is 5081 1234 5678 9012, your password would be 0213789012. For assistance, contact the CIT Help Desk at http://helpdesk.buffalo.edu (716) 645-3542.
General Registration Questions
Question: What is the first day I can register for classes?
Answer:
- The first day you can register for classses depends upon your registration window. To find your registration window for a semester, you should select the Check Registration Window button from the Web Registration Menu.
Question: Where can I find a list of registration numbers for classes I want to take?
Answer:
- The online class schedule will identify the registration numbers, days, times, etc. at http://src.buffalo.edu/schedule
Question: How do I view my schedule?
Answer:
- There are two ways you can view your schedule from Web Registration.
- Select the View Schedule button from the Registration Menu. From the drop-down list that is display, select the semester you want to see.
- From the page where you are dropping or adding courses, press the View Schedule button. The displayed schedule will reflect the semester for which you are currently registering.
Question: When I add or drop a class through Web Registration, does it show up immediately on my schedule?
Answer:
- Yes.
Question: After I register for classes and view my schedule, how do I save the schedule?
Answer:
- There is nothing additional you need to do. When you add or delete courses through Web Registration, you are making real-time changes to you record. If changes you made are reflected on the schedule you view from Web Registration, your records are updated.
Question: What does it mean when the course I selected says "Capacity Reached?
Answer:
- It means that the course is at capacity and cannot be added at this time, even by force registration.
Question: What does it mean when the course I selected says "Closed"?
Answer:
- The course is not available for registration.
Question: Web Registration asked me to declare a major? Do I need to be accepted into a major to select it?
Answer:
- No. This is just an indication of your intended/declared major. Matriculated, undeclared, undergraduate students must identify an intended major during initial registration each semester.
Question: I am not able to register. Web Registration says I have a checkstop/hold. What does this mean and how do I fix it?
Answer:
- There are several reasons why a checkstop/hold might appear on your records. Some checkstops/holds allow you only to drop courses, while others prevent any registration activity. The Web Registration page which notified you of the checkstop/hold should have included a letter code(s) which indicates the type of checkstop/hold. If you scroll down on that screen you will find a table which describes the type of checkstop/hold, and who you must contact for resolution.
Question: I would like to enroll in some distance learning courses. How would I do this?
Answer:
- Contact UB's Millard Fillmore College.
Understanding Error Messages
"Your connection to Web Registration has expired."
Answer:
- Your Web Registration will automatically expire after a period of inactivity. This does not affect any changes that you have made to your records prior to the session expiration.
"Your record is currently unavailable for update."
Answer:
- This message means that your record is being held for some reason. You or someone in a UB office is accessing your record. Wait 15 minutes and try again. If your session is the cause, it will time out and your record will be released. If still cannot access your record after waiting, contact the Student Response Center at (716)645-2450 or toll free at 1-866-838-7257.
"Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site https://proxy.buffalo.edu. The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response."
Answer:
- This is a known problem with Internet Explorer when accessing some secure sites. The problem should be eliminated by making the following small, one-time change to your browser settings:
- On the Tools (or View) menu, click Internet Options
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Scroll down to the heading HTTP1.1 and uncheck both options that fall under it.
- Quit and restart Internet Explorer.
Security
Question: What do I have to do to make sure my records are secure when using Web Registration?
Answer:
- Web Registration was developed with the security of your records first and foremost in mind. If you use Web Registration from a public computer, you must be sure to exit properly. This means:
- Click the exit button. There is an exit button on each Web Registration screen. Clicking this button terminates the link to Web Registration and releases your record.
- Close all browser sessions. As long as the browser session is open your security credentials are held. Even if your surf the net for a long time after registering, your security credentials will be active. However, the next user will see the log-on identification tag, and know re-authentication is necessary.
- If you use Web Registration from your own computer, it is advisable to check that your browser is not set to return cached pages.
Question: How do I know if I logged off correctly?
Answer:
- When you press the Exit button, a page will be displayed that begins with "Stop! Close all browsers!" If you see this page, you know that your Web Registration session was closed properly, and that your record has been released. At this time, close the browser window you are working on. In most Window's environments, this means clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of the window. If this was the only browser session your had open, then you have exited properly. Check to make sure there are no other browser sessions open on that machine. If there are, close them in the same way. Once all browser windows are closed, your security authentication has been released, and no one can access your records even if they use the same machine.
Question: Why do I have to press the Exit button and close my browser?
Answer:
- Each of these two actions causes a specific function to occur:
- Pressing the Exit button releases your record, and frees up a session for another user.
- Closing your browsers releases your credentials.
- If you close the browser without clicking Exit, your record will be held until an automatic time-out period expires. This means that you will have to wait to get back in.
- Clicking Exit but leaving the browser open means that another user who comes to that machine has your credentials and can get into your records.
Question: If I have a separate browser session open to a different web site, do I have to close that browser session too?
Answer:
- Yes. You must close all open browser sessions to erase your security credentials.
Question: If I came into Web Registration through MyUB, can I use the MyUB logoff button to exit Web Registration?
Answer:
- No. You must click the Exit button on one of the Web Registration screens to clear your record, and then close your browser. This is sufficient for logging off MyUB also.
Question: Does Web Registration leave cookies on my machine?
Answer:
- No. Web Registration does not make use of cookies.
